when i did my Playtime roundup post, i completely forgot to include Caramel Baby & Child on my favorites list. i am not sure why it slipped my mind then, but i don't think there is ever a bad time to feature this fantastic English brand. not only are the clothes to die for, Caramel also brings you vintage inspired shoes, toys, books and decor. i love the modern cuts with vintage undertones. the muted fabrics and colors you don't otherwise see in children's fashion. i would have loved to wear these clothes when i was a little girl. and i would get the entire collection for Sasha if i could!

there are necklaces and flowers, cards and cupcakes too. so many different ways to tell mom, "i love you!" but my favorite way to show mom how much i care, is to give her a little piece of art and a poem that tells her that she's in my heart and she will always be there!

and this little free downloadable art is what the lovely Maddie from Li'l Magoolie and i created for you this mother's day. Maddie is a mum from New Zealand and her awesome blog Li'l Magoolie is one of my all time favorite daily reads! so much fun things to look at and so much inspiration to be had. i have been a fan for a while and was beyond excited to collaborate on this project with her. i hope you like it as much as we do. i am sharing with you the little boy version of the download and Maddie is sharing the little girl version on Li'l Magoolie. feel free to download both, frame them and give them to your mom for her special day.

ok, i am sure you have noticed that the blog has been at a stand still for a couple of days. i was hoping everything would be up and running by Monday but unfortunately technical difficulties have made the process of moving to Wordpress a little lengthier than i had expected. so unfortunately you will have to wait a few more days before the unveiling of the new and improved DSM. but i hope the end result will be worth the wait. although i was supposed to wait to post, i am going to do so anyway because i have so much exciting things to share. the new Babiekins is out and i am so excited for you to see it. it was a blast putting it together and also contributing some of my own little art. there are so many great things to see in Issue 5 but i am only going to give you a little peek here with 3 wonderful things. i hope you like the issue. let us know what you think ;)

happy friday everyone! i had such a cute DIY invite post scheduled for today but unfortunately you are going to have to wait until Monday to see it. see, as usual, i was working on some crafty little project for the blog and in order to make sure that the kids din't get to it and make it their own little project, i hid it far, far away. so far in fact, that i cannot remember where that far, far away is. i have searched all my usual hiding places to no avail. so i had to start from scratch ;( that's ok though, it gives me the chance to work on any necessary improvements. for now i welcome you to catch up on this week's posts, my contributory posts on Little Miss Heirlooms and Spearmint Baby and my Chicago City Guide guest post on Babycchino Kids, one of my all time favorite blogs! i am sure if you are a regular reader of Diaper Style Memoirs, you are already familiar with my obsession with dolls. specially hand made, one of a kind creations like the ones i am featuring today. i am sure this obsession comes from the fact that i only had a handful of dolls to play with when i was a little girl in Ukraine. i remember my favorite one was a tiny little rubber baby doll. i carried her everywhere with me, i crocheted clothes for her and made a dollhouse from an old shoe box for her to live in. she even had a table in her kitchen i made from a match box and little plates to eat from i cut out from old plastic pill containers. i also remember making dolls from corn husks when my grandma's corn fields were in bloom. i never dreamed of ever having dolls like the ones i am featuring today by a Portuguese artist named Rita Pinheiro. maybe that's why i am on a mission to create this one of a kind collection for Sasha. or maybe it's really for me since i don't really let her play with all my favorites? not yet ;)

i just adore Rita's Etsy shop Matilde Beldroega. i love all her dolls. their unique eyes and the facial expressions. i am smitten with the colors and the fabrics that she uses. i also adore the fact that she makes some boy dolls as well. how charming is the bearded man? here are just some of my favorites.

sasha's diary - i say tomato you say ....

i am not sure if i told you about Eve yet, but she is my bff. my bestest friend. we are almost the same age. i am two months older though and thus more mature. anyway, we have had wonderful times together - playing at Gymboree, building Legos and holding hands. our relationship however, is not always a bed of roses. we have ups and we have downs. probably more downs that ups really. most of the time when we get together, a war ensues. it's always over the silliest of things but we both cannot help it. we are just two fiery little girls. i say, "it's my scooter." she doesn't listen and screams back, "no it's Evies." i mean there is no reasoning with her sometimes. and last time we got together for a play date, our relationship hit a new low - it turned to violence. Eve swung at me and i swung back. i screamed. she screamed. we both started crying uncontrollably. we were pulled apart and put in separate corners to cool off. even from far away, she kept on swinging. but after all the abuse, after all the drama, when we were leaving to go home, i didn't want to go. "i wanni play with baby Eve," i said still whimpering. "no wanni go home!" but we went home anyway.

yesterday a huge surprise. baby Eve came over for dinner. i was so excited to see her. we actually were fine for a couple of minutes and then another war. this one was the worst one yet. over another silly thing. she was coloring and said something about a ball, "it's my papa!" i looked at her and said, "it's my pall!" the screamed back, "it's my papa!" and i, "it's my pall!" the screaming escalated, her daddy even tried to hold her back. she started swinging. you should have seen the rage, "its my papa" she kept on yelling. i answered every time, "it's my pall!" it was terrible i tell you. Nini started running around suggesting everyone go home. why go home, i didn't understand. all Eve had to do is admit the ball is Sasha's! that's all! instead she kept on screaming, "it's my papa!" but you know what? even after yesterday's fiasco, i cannot wait to see baby Eve again! i think i love her!

from mom's kitchen - breakfast tortilla

Breakfast Tortilla

yesterday i was too tired to go to the store. i opened the fridge on several occasions just to reassure myself that i need to go but opted to stay home nonetheless. i was hoping that everyone would settle for eating good old oatmeal for dinner :) we ended up ordering out but today in the morning i was faced with the same empty fridge and hungry family. so i had to come up with something. i opened the fridge once again and reassessed the situation inside. i had 4 eggs and 2 potatoes. some milk at the very bottom of the carton. a clove of garlic and some smoked salmon remnants. oh, and i managed to find a couple of good basil leaves among the rotting bunch. a lightbulb went off. spanish tortilla! voila! a delicious breakfast! or lunch. or tapa for your dinner party. i didn't have time to write down the recipe so i found a good one you can try here. now it's time to hit the store. not an egg left ;)

i love everything about Mini Rodini. the quirkiness. the charm. i would get every piece from the Spring/Summer collection if i could. if, i had an unlimited budget that is. unfortunately i am not that lucky but i can probably splurge on a couple of pieces. the dilemma - i just can't decide what pieces i should buy. should i get Sasha the amazing heart overalls, the frill swimsuit, or, the out of this world, godzilla leggings. the leggings make me smile every time i see them. i LOVE this brand and i am sure you will too. what pieces would you get? check out the rest of the collection here and weigh in :).

sasha's diary - first day of summer

yesterday was the first day of summer. well i think it was. it was soooo hot outside and Nini was running around all excited screaming, "yeah, it's finally summer!" anyway, to celebrate, we had a full day of family fun scheduled. unfortunately nothing turned out as planned. and instead of a celebration, i had a first day of summer cryfest. phew! i am so glad the nightmare is over and we are back to spring.

first, you won't believe what daddy tried to do to me. he tried to put me in this seat thing on the back of his bike. he straddled me in there, locked my feet into place and then to top it off, he put some pink hard hat on my head and closed it tight right under my chin. "NOOOOOOOO!" i screamed, "NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!" but he seemed to not hear me at all. "no hat, no hat! i wanna get up!" i continued to scream as daddy and mommy tried to convince me that IT would be fun. what IT was i didn't know. but whatever IT was, IT wasn't going to be fun if IT required me to sit in this seat and wear this ridiculously uncomfortable and unfashionable hat. i screamed and screamed and cried until finally they let me down. Nini was mad at me. he sat on the ground pouting and blaming me for ruining family fun day. whatever Nini. i shook my little finger at him and said, "NO! NEVER ride bikes!"

well that was over and soon we were back in the car going somewhere. at this point i didn't care where we were going as long as i was off that bike and back in my comfy car seat. and then a welcome surprise. the BEACH! i was so excited. last year i was too scared. the sand felt funny on my feet. this time it was glorious. i ran all the way toward the water. i wanted to jump right in. so i began to undress. mommy helped me with my dress. ahh the sun felt so good on my body. but i couldn't go in the water with my tights on. so i began to pull them down. i was rudely interrupted by mommy saying, "no Sasha! you have to undies on! you can't be naked!" and why not???? i can't go swim swim with my tights. who does that? so i continued to pull them down and she continued to pull them back up again. a pulling war ensued and i was forced to throw another tantrum. "NO, no pants! NO pants! i wannna swim swim!" i tried to explain. but once again no one would listen. and soon i was back in mommy's arms walking towards the car screaming and crying. Nini was once again pouting. blaming me for ruining family fun day yet again!

sasha's diary - out of tune

oh man, mommy is so annoying. every time my favorite song comes on the radio or on the TV she bursts into song and ruins the entire listening experience for me. so now i watch her mouth closely, and if it opens wide and gets ready to belt out a tune, i preemptively scream, "mommy, NO! NO mommy! stop that! stop that now. no singing mommy! NO! shhhhhhhhh!" i make a very serious face as well just to make sure she gets it. oy! seriously! i cannot listen to another botched tune. mommy gets all sad and tells me that she wants to sing together. no thank you mommy! have you heard yourself? lets try to build something with Legos instead.

i wrote about Babylady a few months ago when the Spring/Summer collection was unveiled. i was in love with this brand from the first time i saw it. now i have an even greater affinity for Babylady, its design and craftsmanship. while in NY, I was fortunate enough to meet Kat West - the creative mastermind behind the brand name. she embodied everything that Babylady stands for. she was fun and trendy. creative and original. after talking to her over lunch, i simply couldn't wait to see what the Fall/Winter collection would look like. alas! it's here and it's brilliant. i cannot get over the kirby coat and the two tone glitter pants. yes - glitter pants!!!

one year ago today, the first Diaper Style Memoirs post was published. i wasn't sure where it would take me or if anyone would ever read it. i created it for Sasha and myself. a diary for her and a little outlet for my cooped up creativity. throughout the year, i was fortunate enough to get a little following and make lots of friends along the way. thank you all for a great first year. for all of your kind words, guidance and support! can you believe that a year ago i had to cut out pictures, make collages and scan them in in order to create a composed layout? photoshop what? had no idea! no wonder it took me weeks to publish one post ;).

so you know how i love chocolate. i mean LOVE! chocolate pudding is my favorite way to indulge in this delicious concoction. yesterday i was lucky enough to find a chocolate pudding cup in the back of the fridge. as i was savoring each spoonful i noticed my nuki laying next to me. i looked at it for a second and pondered, "what would happen if the chocolate met my other love - the nuki?" i wasn't sure but i was excited to find out. i grabbed the nuki and dunked it in the chocolate. i put the chocolate covered nuki in my mouth. HEAVEN! i was at a loss for words. i don't know why i didn't think of this before. this has to be my greatest invention yet. forget about chocolate covered fruit. a chocolate covered pacifier is the way to truly indulge.

while i am on the nuki subject, can you believe my mommy tried to trick me last night? lazy mommy! during the night, i am not really sure what happened, but i woke up and noticed my nuki was not in my mouth. i was probably dreaming of Kingston again and the nuki fell out of my mouth as i was drooling. anyway, long story short - i called mommy so she can come and find it for me. i tried to locate it myself with no success. she came in with eyes closed, stuck a nuki in my mouth, and left. i closed my eyes but quickly realized that something was terribly wrong. the nuki in my mouth was not the one i lost. she tricked me! instead of looking for my orange nuki, she gave me my white one instead. she thought that i wouldn't be able to tell the difference in the dark. right! so i called out, "mommy, i wanni orange nuki! orange nuki!" no response. "no white nuki mommy! ORANGE!" the door opened and the light went on. a very irritated mommy with one eye open, got on all fours and crawled around the bed. "aha! there it is! thank you mommy. go sleep sleep mommy." oh, and don't try to trick Sasha again!!!

today i was really excited to get back to one of my favorite pastimes - painting. mommy bought me some new paint and let me go to town. i painted yet another masterpiece. this one was as exceptional as ever. it made me really proud. the composition was stunning and the color combination was divine. overall a great piece. i lifted it up above my head at least 20 times, making sure everyone saw my artistic achievement. "look, look at this. wow. butiful!" i repeated over and over. here it is. my newest creation. i call it "spring"

anyway, on with my tale. so after i was done painting, i helped mommy clean up and afterwards we sat down to play a matching card game. then the phone rang. mommy picked it up and put it next to her ear to answer. she said, "hello" and made a curious face. as if i made a "pook" or something. i sniffed around but didn't smell a thing. she said a couple of words, said bye, pulled the phone back and examined it. i looked at mommy, pointed to her ear and began to cry, "mommy hurt! hurt mommy." there was blood all over her ear. all over the phone too. but then i quickly realized that it wasn't blood after all. during all that artistic expression, i must have painted the phone. oops!

the latest trend is - Petite Maloles! these are simply the most gorgeous shoes around. i recently purchased a pair for Sasha but instead of letting her wear them, i keep them in the box tucked deep inside the closet. then when i need something beautiful to look at and caress, i take them out. i put them in my hands and feel the soft supple leather. take in the meticulous attention to detail. when i've had my fill, i put them back into the box deep inside the closet. a little neurotic maybe? yes! but i know some of you will understand ;). the good news - the brand also makes a women's line.

ask DSM... all about mozzarella

i was recently asked the following question, "what is burrata anyway? is it the same as fresh mozzarella or is it better?" i thought that if one person is curious about the difference then maybe some of you readers would be as well. so here is my little educational post on all the different types of fresh mozzarella available today. and let be begin by saying, i absolutely love all of them. it's one of those foods that i have on hand at all times. it's so simple to make a meal out of mozzarella, it is a must have staple. specially for all of you busy moms out there. you know, those of you who are so concerned with making sure your kids are fed that feeding yourself is an afterthought ;).

1. fresh mozzarella - you can find this type of cheese in different sizes and shapes. it's available everywhere and is made from cow's milk. it is a semi-soft cheese. it is mild in flavor and stands up well to different ingredients. my favorite thing to do with with this type of mozzarella is make basil and tomato panini. it's easy and quick and makes a lovely meal.

2. mozzarella di bufala (buffalo mozzarella) - is the more flavorful cousin of cow's milk mozzarella. it is a delectable treat that comes directly from Italy. it is made from the milk of water buffalo. i love this cheese! you can find it in most grocery stores in the US and abroad. i usually get mine from Costco! mozzarella di bufala is so good on it's own making a meal out of it is a breeze. most of the time i make a simple salad of heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil, a sprinkling of kosher salt and freshly ground pepper. drizzle of good quality extra virgin olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar. some crusty bread. that's it! a tasty meal at your finger tips.

3. burrata - i love burrata! it's not as readily available as the other types of mozzarella but if you can find it it - get it! i can usually find burrata at Whole Foods. burrata is made from buffalo mozzarella and cream. the outer shell is solid mozzarella while the inside contains mozzarella curd and cream. it's also best served simple. the tastiest burrata concoction i have ever indulged in was a simple salad of burrata, grilled radicchio, anchovies and balsamic. it was a simple lunch in Rome.

sasha's diary - what its doing here?

my mommy thinks there is a ghost in the house. some strange things have been happening around here lately but no one knows who's to blame. like a few days ago, daddy brought home some yummy ice cream from the store. we all had a scoop after dinner. Nini had two. he even ate all of his asparagus during dinner in exchange for that second scoop. that's the only way he will eat his veggies. if there is dessert to be had.

anyway, after we were done with the ice cream, daddy put the carton back in the freezer. the next day, mommy looked for it. the ice scream wasn't inside. it just disappeared. Nini said he didn't take it. daddy said he didn't eat it. mommy even turned to me and asked if i had seen it. of course i said, "no" and shook my head from side ;). it was a mystery. a couple of days passed. daddy was getting ready for work. he was looking for something in his closet. a pair of shoes, i think. mommy and i were playing in the living room. all of a sudden we heard daddy, "did Sasha pee in the closet?" "what? come on daddy," i thought, "i've been potty trained for months now!" confused, mommy sprung up from the floor and ran to the bedroom. i decided to stay behind. but then curiosity overwhelmed me. i had to know what was happening. i ran into the bedroom right as mommy reached her hand far into one of daddy's shoe cubbies and pulled out a dried up, sticky ice cream carton. they both turned and looked at me. "wow! yummy ice sceam!" i screamed and raised my hands up in amazement, "yummy ice sceam! "what its doing here?" i curiously asked. then quickly turned around and ran out of the room.

it's a mystery. the ghost must like ice scream. grapes too, i think. in his apple juice. because today, when mommy went to pour me some apple juice she discovered grapes floating in the jug. now how did those get there? yet another ghostly conundrum.

sasha's diary - "i say NO"

the last couple of days have been dreadful. i have been sick. my first real illness. i have had colds in the past and runny noses but i have never had the flu. never in my two and a half years. "shoo, shoo, you yucky flu," is the only thing i can say about the flu. i am so weak and cranky. all kinds of crazy things have been happening to my little body. i don't want to gross you out but i thought food was supposed to go in and stay in your tummy. i guess i was wrong. and, i have never spent so much time on the potty. thankfully my potty is quite comfy otherwise i would have to resort to wearing diaper pants again. no one wants that to happen i am sure!

i thought at least this flu thing would get me some sympathy. not from Nini. he has been as nasty as ever. switching the channel and not sharing his toys. he even hit me with a ball. he threw it right at my head. mean Nini. even if he didn't do it on purpose. that's ok though, i am no push over. even when sick. every time he wants something or tries to pry the remote from my hands, i scream, "i say NO! i say NO" and that usually puts him in his place. urgh! big brothers!

all the clever things i said...

a story came to mind today. it made me laugh out loud. so i decided to come home and share it with you. this incident occurred when Nicky was around three and a half years old. my husband took him to the local gym for a swim. this was their exchange in the men's locker room while changing. my husband is still scarred!

a puzzled Nick looked at his dad and inquired, "Dad, why is your peepee so much bigger than mine?" a little stunned, Dad briefly explained, "because i am a grownup and you're a little boy. when you grow up, all your body parts will also grow and you will be big just like me." Nick didn't say much in response and continued changing. he looked around the room. he spotted another man changing. he stared a little, then turned to Dad and asked, "dad, why is that man's peepee so much bigger than yours?" Dad didn't say much in response. instead, he took Nicky by his hand, gathered up all their belongings and proceeded straight to the family changing room. the private family changing room!

there were so many amazing brands showing at Playtime, it was really hard to pick favorites. after much deliberation i came up with this little list. check out the brands' latest collections and share your thoughts with us!

A For Apple is the go to brand for edgy preppy basics. these are the clothes that your children will live in every day. but they will look modern, stylish and cool while wearing them.

Atsuyo Et Akiko may be difficult to pronounce but the clothing and accessories made by this brand will remain engraved in your mind long after the name escapes you. the gold foil mask bags, the signature je t'aime tees, the modern tutus are all faves.

when i look at Kicokids, i see clothing that i wished i had worn when i was a child. the pieces are always fun and colorful. the patterns are whimsical and the cuts are flattering to every child. it is often difficult to find cute clothes for boys. Kicokids is one of the few brands that puts as much thought into boyswear as the girls collections. and that thought definitely pays off each season.

the goat heads on the wall were a fun treat. and the collection was as well. Goat-Milk offers a paired down collection of european inspired children's underwear. and i absolutely love it. i always find it difficult to find pajamas for my children. ones that are soft and light and comfy to wear. Goat-Milk makes underwear that is beyond soft and comfy. the pieces are gorgeous as well.

love, love, love this denim brand and the two lovely people behind it. when i saw the pieces in this brand's collection, i was reminded of Diesel when it first made it's debut. the pieces where beyond interesting and trendy. they were art in denim form. it is a rare occurrence for me to love everything about a particular brand. i.e. i may like some pieces from a designer but find the branding or the story behind the line not as appealing. Kutie Protocol is the perfect package. the designs are fresh and unique. the clothes are made using eco-friendly technologies and sustainable production techniques. the pieces are soft and wearable. above all - the brand has charm. the story behind the line is as magical as each pair of jeans, inspired by historical couples like Adam & Eve and Bonnie & Clide.

Playtime was my first encounter with Lamantine and i have to say it was love at first site. i am sure a lot of it had to do with the Italian charm of the designer herself. i am obsessed with Italy and many times the mere mention of the word Italian stirs up so many overwhelming feelings of love my judgement becomes a bit cloudy. this was not the case. i liked everything about this brand. the fact that it was Italian was a minor detail. it was girlier than some of the other brands i have already mentioned but the pieces were so beautifully constructed and the details were so inspirational that i had to include it on my list. my favorite pieces were from the Fall/Winter 2011 collection which are not yet available to view, but trust me they are worth waiting for. once you see the silk studded tunics and dresses you will be smitten!

Le Vestiaire de Jeanne is one of my favorite children's brands. i love the voluminosity of the pieces and the ease of wearability. to me the clothes are chic, simple and cool. i would wear them myself if i could.

Pale Cloud is a new brand on the scene but it is making a splash. i wish i can share with you some of the extraordinary pieces i saw from this brand, but unfortunately my camera died :(. i hope my description here will do it justice. the color palate is classic european with muted tones of pale pink, gray and white. the clothes are beautifully crafted and light. soft details, like the scallops on the white dress pictured above, are meticulously hand stitched. the standout pieces for me are definitely the Inez dusty pink rain coat and the Mille cashmere and wool military coat. look for these pieces in future posts ;).

there is no other brand like Wovenplay really. the clothes are one of a kind. the construction is superb and the pieces are magical. you will keep these masterpieces long after your child outgrows them in hopes that one day you will have a grandchild to hand them down to. they are just that gorgeous!

playtime in New York

wonderfully handmade - from drab to fab

2 Hearts Tee

it always make me a bit emotional when Nicholas and Sasha outgrow their clothes. there are so many memories tied to each outfit and to every piece. i don't mind giving away the stuff that's outgrown to friends and family but i usually reserve only the pieces that are in good shape for hand me downs. the clothing that's descent, i donate to the salvation army. and then i am always left with some articles that may technically fit, but are way to soiled and grimy for any child to wear. last time i cleaned out Sasha's closet there were three shirts that all had prominent stains or holes. each one was unwearable but still quite sentimental. so i decided to use the material from these shirts and turn a plain drab tee into a fabulous piece for Sasha to wear. oh, and a cute heart necklace to compliment the tee which she refused to wear ;). click here for a quick tutorial.

i adore this nursery - the use of color and the wonderful collection of classic books, vintage toys and furniture. while i love everything about this room, my favorite piece in is the rocking horse. it adds so much whimsy and fun. i love this one in particular. the unique metal base makes this horse that much more special for me. a vintage rocking horse is such a great item to decorate your child's room with. the best part is that every one you will find is bound to be a special, one of a kind piece.
